Introduction: The Power of Mindfulness and Recollection
In our pursuit of a virtuous and happy path, just as an elephant is guided by a lasso and a hook, our minds require the presence of recollection and mindfulness. Without these essential qualities, our minds tend to veer off towards unhappiness, suffering, and even violence. Thus, it becomes paramount to cultivate recollection and mindfulness as a means to navigate our lives towards a virtuous and harmonious existence. In this article, we delve into the significance of recollection and mindfulness, exploring their role in shaping our thoughts and actions for a more fulfilling life.
1. The Blessings of Recollection and Mindfulness
Recollection and mindfulness form the foundation of our spiritual journey, and seeking the blessings of enlightened beings like the Buddha can profoundly impact our lives. By invoking phrases such as “Lama chyenno…” as a way of requesting Buddha’s blessings, we affirm our commitment to nurturing these vital qualities within ourselves.
2. The Power of Recollection: Remembering Right and Wrong
Recollection empowers us to distinguish between right and wrong, serving as a constant reminder of the consequences of our actions. When we engage in negative behavior, recollection prompts us to reflect upon the detrimental outcomes that follow. Similarly, recollection acknowledges the positive results that arise from virtuous deeds. By cherishing the teachings of the Buddha, we hold onto a precious guide to navigate life’s complexities.
3. The Pitfalls of Forgetfulness: Straying from the Path
Often, individuals who are diligent practitioners while in the presence of others can falter when separated from their spiritual community. Forgetfulness becomes their greatest adversary, hindering the blessings bestowed upon them by past, present, and future Buddhas. This profound insight from the Vajra Pinnacle Tantra emphasizes the detrimental consequences of forgetting the Buddha’s teachings.
4. The Story of the Forgotten Egg: The Ramifications of Habitual Negativity
Allow me to share a personal anecdote that sheds light on the power of forgetfulness. Once, I prepared three eggs—one each for Wongmo, Sunny, and myself. As Sunny was engrossed in her editing work, I left her egg in a bowl of water, intending to give it to her later. However, consumed by forgetfulness, I absentmindedly ate the egg meant for Sunny. Realizing my oversight only after finishing it, I felt a pang of regret for not dedicating it to her. This incident exemplifies how negative habits can swiftly overshadow our good intentions, impeding our ability to perform virtuous acts.
5. Forgetfulness: The Antithesis of Recollection
Forgetfulness stands as the antithesis of recollection, epitomizing distractions that thwart our progress. Engaging in multiple tasks simultaneously, as exemplified by my story, leads to a lack of examination and a propensity to act without hesitation. A mere two thoughts—egg and hunger—resulted in the unconscious consumption of Sunny’s egg. Cultivating even a modicum of recollection serves as a powerful counterbalance, enabling us to make conscious choices aligned with our virtuous intentions.
6. The Importance of Remembering Buddha’s Teachings
As individuals embark on their dharma journey, the duration of their study varies. Some devote a hundred days, others seventy or thirty, and many have dedicated themselves to learning for several years. However, the true essence lies not in the duration but in the remembrance of Buddha’s teachings. Similar to driving an airplane, where the pilot memorizes the necessary procedures, remembering the steps in practicing dharma becomes paramount. Visualizations, arousing intentions, and maintaining focused minds are critical for the swift attainment of True Happiness in this very life.
